Reasearch project launched in the Islands

A study into the genetics of MS in the northern islands of Scotland is being launched this month.

Novel techonology will be used to expore the high prevalence of MS in the Scottish island groups of Orkney and Shetland. The reduced genetic and environmental diversity in these populations makes them ideal for the study of the genetics of a complex disease like MS.
The study is being led by Dr Jim Wilson, a population geneticist at Edinburgh University, and is funded by MS Society Scotland.
All willing MS cases in Orkney and Shetland will be recruited. Dr Wilson also wants to recruit MS patients born in Orkney and Shetland who have moved elsewhere for the research. They are asked to ring 0131 651 1643 or e-mail orkney@ed.ac.uk
